How to Make Cortana Use Chrome or Your Default Browser
Microsoft’s Cortana is a very handy digital assistant, but she has her limits. One of those limits is the web browser she uses by default, it’s Microsoft Edge. However, you can change that.
Whether you want to use Chrome for its extensions or you just prefer it as your default browser, here’s how to make Cortana use Chrome or your default browser instead of Edge.
How to Set Google Chrome as Your Default Browser
Assuming you’re running the latest version of Windows 10, you can set Google Chrome as your default browser in just a few easy steps:
1. Open Chrome and click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the window.
2. Hover over “Settings” and then select “Advanced.”
3. Under the “Reset and clean up” section, click “Restore settings to their original defaults.”
4. A pop-up window will appear; click “Reset settings.”
5. Once reset is complete, open the Windows 10 Settings app (you can do this by typing “Settings” into the Start menu).
6. Click on “System,” then “Default apps.”
7. Scroll down to the very bottom and find the section labeled “Web browser.”
8. Click on the drop-down menu and select “Google Chrome.”
That’s it! Now all your Microsoft Cortana searches will open in Google Chrome instead of Microsoft Edge.
How to Set Cortana to Use Your Default Browser
Assuming you’re using Microsoft Edge as your default browser and want to switch to Chrome, follow these steps:
1. Open Cortana and click the Notebook icon.
2. Click Settings.
3. Scroll down to the section labeled “Web Browser” and click the switch next to “Let Cortana open my web pages.” This will enable the drop-down menu below it.
4. From the drop-down menu, select Google Chrome (or your preferred browser).
5. Click Save.
6. You may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
How to Set Firefox as Your Default Browser
If you’re a fan of Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant, you may have noticed that it defaults to using Microsoft Edge for web searches. That can be frustrating if you prefer to use another browser, like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Luckily, there’s an easy way to change Cortana’s default browser.
Here’s how:
1. Open Cortana and click the Notebook icon.
2. Click the Settings gear icon.
3. Scroll down to the “Web Browser” section and click the “Choose a default web browser” drop-down menu.
4. Select your preferred browser from the list (Firefox, in our case).
5. Close the settings window and enjoy using Cortana with your preferred browser!
How to Set Internet Explorer as Your Default Browser
It’s easy to set Internet Explorer as your default browser.
Here’s how:
1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools icon in the top right corner.
2. Select Internet Options from the drop-down menu.
3. In the pop-up window, select the Programs tab.
4. Under the heading “Choose how you open links,” click on the radio button next to “Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop.”
5. Click Apply and then OK to close the window.
That’s it! Now all your links will open in Internet Explorer by default.
How to Set Microsoft Edge as Your Default Browser
If you’re a Microsoft Edge user, you can easily set it as your default browser so Cortana will use it when she searches the web for things.
Here’s how:
1. Type “default apps” into the search bar and click on the first result.
2. In the window that appears, scroll down until you see “Web browser.”
3. Click on the drop-down menu next to it and select “Microsoft Edge.”
4. Close the window and you’re all set! Now when Cortana searches the web, she’ll use Microsoft Edge as your default browser.
Step 1: Changing your Default Browser in Windows 10
If you’re a Windows 10 user, you’ve probably noticed that Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana uses the company’s Edge browser by default. While Edge is a perfectly capable browser, many users prefer to use alternatives like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

If you’d prefer to use a different browser as your default in Windows 10, it’s actually quite easy to change.
Here’s how:
1. Open the Settings app by clicking on the Start menu and selecting the gear icon.
2. Click on System.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, select Default apps.
4. Under Web browser, click on the browser you’d like to use as your default and then close the Settings app.
That’s all there is to it! From now on, any time you click on a link in another app (like an email client or instant messenger), it will open in your preferred browser rather than Edge.
Step 2: Set Cortana to Use Your Default Browser with EdgeDeflector
Assuming you have EdgeDeflector installed, go to its settings and click the “Choose defaults…” button. In the list of programs that appears, select Microsoft Edge and set it as the default for everything.
Now launch Cortana and try setting a reminder or asking her a question. She should open your default browser rather than Microsoft Edge.
If you want Cortana to use your default browser, you can do so by setting the “CortanaUseDefaultBrowser” DWORD value to 1 in the registry. You can do this by opening the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and going to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
Once you’re there, create a new DWORD value named “CortanaUseDefaultBrowser” and set its value to 1. Save your changes and restart your computer for the change to take effect.
With this change made, Cortana will now use your default browser when you ask it to open a website.
Step 3: Set Cortana to Use Google instead of Bing
To change Cortana’s default search engine to Google, you’ll need to edit the Windows Registry. Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
Here’s how:
1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type “Regedit” and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
3. In the left pane, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Assistance\Client\1.0\SearchScopes.
4. Double-click on the DefaultScope entry in the right pane and change its value from {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A} to {B1192495-73F5-4555-956C-9C5DCD98AA54}. This will tell Cortana to use Google instead of Bing for its searches.
5. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.”
